Good Details @geno . What do you call that back step toward your lead foot? I have heard it called crow step, cheater step, just curious.

Also appreciate the detail on the lead downblock hand matching their lead / front leg in their stange. Controlling their shooting hand is missed my many coaches and athletes.

  Hey Jeff! I’ve heard it referred to as a cheat step. I usually just refer to it as cheating your back leg up. The more you’re moving the feet the easier it is to hide the step. Also hand movement/fighting will distract them which allows you to hide the step as well!

@geno on the second video I appreciate the simple explanation as long range, I have called this and been calling it loose ties for years, but think your varied ranges – open, long, medium, short, make it easier for an athlete to understand distance and the type of setup for that range position, similar to the way boxing is taught. vs Space, Loose, Control, Counter ties verbiage

  Yes, I’ve heard the term loose ties a good bit as well! I thought this language would be a bit easier for folks to understand, especially in the BJJ community. Thanks for the comments!

    I think it’s way easier to understand, and am going to adopt it as much as I can in my teaching
